Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (or 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon)
  • 1 vanilla bean (split and scraped) or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 black tea bag or 1 teaspoon loose-leaf black tea (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar, honey, or sweetener of choice
  • 1 star anise (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small pot, bring water to just below boiling.
  2. Add the cinnamon stick and split vanilla bean (or extract). Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. If using black tea, add it now and steep for an additional 3-5 minutes.
  4. Strain the mixture into your favorite mug.
  5. Heat the milk in another pot until warm but not boiling; froth if desired.
  6. Slowly pour the warmed milk into the strained tea mix and stir gently.
  7. Sweeten to taste and garnish with extra cinnamon or star anise if desired.
