Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel-based)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup red velvet cake crumbs (from the cupcake centers)
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 12 tbsp red food coloring (for a vibrant, glossy red hue)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tbsp milk or heavy cream
  • A few drops of ivory or peach food coloring (adjust for a pale skin-tone effect)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Candy fangs or small dots of red vegan gelatin (for puncture marks)
  • Red syrup or edible red gel (for 'blood' drips)
  • Straws (watch out – they are not eatable)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla and red food coloring.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually mix into wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk.
  4. Add baking soda mixed with vinegar. Fill muffin cups two-thirds full and bake for 18-20 minutes until toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Once cool, hollow each cupcake center and fill with prepared red velvet filling made from cake crumbs, sweetened condensed milk, and melted butter.
  6. Frost generously with skin-tone buttercream made from butter, powdered sugar, milk or cream, and food coloring.
