Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Optional: 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water and sugar in a mixing bowl; sprinkle in yeast and let sit until foamy (about 5 minutes).
  2. In another bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Combine with the yeast mixture and olive oil until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size (60–90 minutes).
  5. Gently deflate the dough and divide it into six equal pieces; shape each piece into logs.
  6. Place shaped baguettes on a lined baking sheet; cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat your oven to 425°F. Brush tops with an egg wash if desired.
  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
