  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¾ cup chopped green onion (green parts only)
  • 1 teaspoon nigella seeds (optional)
  • 1 – 1¼ cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar until well combined.
  3. Gently fold in the shredded cheddar cheese, chopped green onions, and nigella seeds if using.
  4. Gradually add buttermilk to the dry mixture until it forms a soft dough; do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and shape it into a disc about 6-8 inches wide.
  6. Score an 'X' on top of the dough with a sharp knife.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before slicing.
